Future of Pakenham Golf Course in jeopardy

Feb 28, 2025

The future of the once popular member’s course at Pakenham is in doubt after current management looks to withdraw its involvement with the maligned course.

Golf Services Management’s contract to manage Pakenham Golf Course will conclude on March 31, 2025. Since reopening as a public facility in December 2023 the Pakenham Golf Course maintenance contractors have faced challenging conditions maintaining the course to the required standard.

Due to major works required to the golf course irrigation system and the majority of green surfaces, Golf Services Management (GSM Golf) will not be entering into the second term of its existing contract beyond April 1st 2025.

The course has been severely impacted by an outdated irrigation system which has prevented the grounds team from being able to adequately water the golf course and keep the winter grasses alive through the warmer months. Additionally, the putting surfaces are infiltrated with a rare weed infestation that cannot be eradicated without fumigation.

With these major works now required, Cardinia Shire Council is currently assessing the facility’s future beyond April 1. Until that time, GSM will continue to operate the venue, working alongside Council to ensure a smooth transition.

Cardinia Shire Council have been very supportive of the facilities’ operation since taking over the responsibility of the golf course from Deep Creek Golf Club, and Council is currently considering next steps for the facility.

Key Information for Patrons:

  • The golf course, clubhouse, driving range and cafe will be closed from April 1st
  • All green fees—whether 9 or 18 holes—are currently being charged at the 9-hole rate.
  • Annual pass holders will be fully reimbursed for any payments made beyond April 1, with no financial impact on members.
  • Deep Creek Eco Play space and kickabout area will remain open and available for the community to enjoy.
